Happy Sunday all! How many of you knew that yesterday was National Bratwurst Day and it also happened to be The Husband’s birthday?! Being the funny guy he is, he was like, I always knew my birthday was associated with some type of “hot dog”. I think I’ve told you all of his love for Hot Dogs, Hot Links, Sausages….it can be tough for him to walk past a Costco, Sam’s Club or Home Depot without stopping for a “dog” LOL.
As part of his birthday week, I decided to do a little cooking with beer and give this new Krusteaz Beer Bread a go.
Not only is this mix super easy to make, check out the delicious cheesy, Beer Brats in a Blanket recipe they give you on the back.
To kick up the flavor for him a bit, I bought these Beer and ‘n Bratwursts…I love that it totally smells like beer when you cook them on the grill.
Another option for those looking for a lighter way to make this recipe is to use one of my favorite Artisan Fresh Mozzarella & Roasted Garlic Chicken Sausages that I buy at Sam’s Club. I do kinda wish that they made a “healthy” beer sausage/brat though
REAL ingredients that you can recognize!
3 points+ each!
You will want to select a beer that you like drinking, like Kona Brewing Co.
Liquid Aloha…..You can buy Longboard as well as this Pale Ale – but I would pick a lighter beer in this recipe to keep your batter a lighter color.
The last ingredient that I think makes all the difference ~ Cabot Sharp Light Cheddar. You want a sharp cheese to give it a bold flavor. This cheese is 1 points+ per ounce – deal!
While the oven preheats, take the beer mix, a little black pepper, sharp cheddar and beer.
Stir until combined….is it weird I can think of tasting almost any batter I make? I totally blame it on the beer smelling so good as you mix it.
Spread half the beer bread on a prepared cookie sheet.
Then again, I am also saying in my head as I type “who let the dogs out – woof, woof!”
Pile on the cooked beer brats or sausage…..his/hers.
Spread the remaining batter on top covering each brat.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes until the dough is cooked through and golden on the bottom. Brush with the mustard butter if using (I skipped this part but would probably add it next time.)
Carefully slice diving up the brats and serve. Seriously ~ after smelling the beer, cheese bread and smoky sausages cook, then, seeing this, it was hard to not dive in right away.
Served up with a side of shishito peppers (my favorite summer thing ~ they are not hot, I promise).
Cheesy, beer bread goodness with a smoky sausage surprise in the middle.
The best part is I get to share some beer bread and free stuff with you all.

I haven’t made this in awhile due to the calories but I used to make homemade beer/cheese bread and serve it with chili. Boy was it delicious! Cooking with beer is the only way I like it, I much prefer the sweet cocktails over a beer any day, but cooking with it is a different story!
