The Great Chip Debate…

June 4, 2012 by DanicasDaily 10 Comments

Happy Monday everyone!  Thanks for sharing your goals ~ they are all awesome and I am so excited to have so many people working their goals with me this summer.  Also, thanks to all those who chimed in on yesterday’s post about my Baked Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar points+.   You all really sparked The Great Chip Debate.

I actually play with Weight Watchers app & E-Tools sometimes to see how to maximize the total # of items I can get in a serving….For example, I know I can get 7 almonds for 1 points+, 12 for 2 points+, etc.  I am all about maximizing my points+ value!

Yesterday I kept with my TRACK IT ALL goal for the month by figuring out the points+ for the couple of chips I stole from The Husband.

When I started playing with the total number you can have on E-Tools (and my phone app!), I was intrigued when it said…..

11 for 1 points+!

I was pretty much ready at that point to consider Baked Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream my chip of choice for life LOL.

IMG_7859

I honestly did not give it much thought until you all chimed in with, hey, wait…..11 chips for only 1 points+?!

So, I decided to do a little math.  I took the total grams 31.8 rounded in the bag and plugged that into the Weight Watchers e-tools calculator……

Guess what ~ it says this bag is only 2 points+ (I am wondering if this value was not updated from flex points).

image

It just goes to show you that whenever you actually have the nutritional information available ~ use it versus what is online as it is going the be the most accurate.

The entire packet is 4 points+ ~ a pretty big difference!

I actually do my best to provide accurate information on what I record, not just for what I share with you all, but, to be honest with myself.   One of the biggest lifestyle changes I had to learn on this journey was that if you track it all and are honest with yourself, then, the program works…..besides, my thighs ALWAYS show know when I didn’t write something down Open-mouthed smile

Sorry for that mix up but I am glad it was only day 1 on my week and I can chalk it up against my WPA.  Thanks everyone!

Moving on to today ~ I actually wanted some Kodiak Flap Jacks this morning but I ran out of time and instead settled for breakfast on the go.

Fage 0% Raspberry Greek Yogurt (3 points+)

Paired with a big bowl of berries & cherries….

IMG_7835

And a Morning Star Veggie Sausage to up the protein staying power (2 points+)

IMG_7838

Mid morning I snacked on a Sargento Colby String Cheese and a banana (2 points+)

IMG_7840

I actually couldn’t wait to dig into lunch today because it involved another one of my delicious roasted red pepper ham & swiss wraps (7 points+)

IMG_7844

Paired with Veggie Tray Veggies and 2 Tbsp Lite Ranch (2 points+)

IMG_7845

Since I was working late tonight, The Husband was in charge of dinner.  On my drive home, he said he was cooking up tacos for us….all I had to do was make sure I stopped to meet him at Chipotle LOL.  I will take these delicious crunchy, chicken tacos any day ~ well, that is, after his delicious grilling. Open-mouthed smile

3 crunchy corn taco shells with chicken, pico de gallo, corn salsa, cheese & lettuce (15 points+ or 5 points+/taco).

The sweet corn salsa totally makes these amazing with the pico and grilled chicken.

Tomorrow is another “Serious TV” day so I am off to catch some zzzzzzz’s!

Night all!

Thanks for the update on the chips, I too wondered about the low points but being elsewhere, the packaging is not always the same. My first thought was I’m getting some of those as I already know how good they are. Still, 2 points+ is still worth it. I love your breakfasts but it brought to mind, you never have boring old cold cereal. It’s one way to get those grains in there. Those tacos do look awesome.

Thanks for clarifying this. I switched from WW to eating cleaning and roughly watching the calories (very roughly). I just feel its weird to recalculate things, when all the info I need is on the package (carbs, fat, calories etc.).

But I love your blog, your food ideas and everything. Went to Trader Joes with your list this week and picked up a ton of stuff (for really cheap too, I was amazed).

–> Glad to know I’m not the only one who does this! 🙂 And great update/info, I love how informative your blog is.

According to the screen shot, the item is Ruffles Light cheddar and sour cream
, not Baked Ruffles cheddar and sour cream. That maybe the reason for the different points. The Light version has Olestra in them. I hope that helps.

You are so right Andrea. THat’s exactly what I thought of when I saw the screen shots, because I eat the Ruffles Light. I can eat more of them than the Ruffles Baked for the same amount of points. I love them.

And another thing about those screen views, the first one shows the chips at 2g each & the 2nd screen shows the chips at 1g each. So in the 1st screen you are actually getting 22 gr of chips.

    Hi Danica,
Thanks for such a great blog! I am a WW leader, and always get great ideas from you – have made quite a few batches of those Cinnamon-Apple mini muffins – yum! Just to join in on the chip debate…the only chips I have found that are 1pp for a 1oz serving, are Sami’s Bakery Millet and Flax Chips. The cinnamon ones are 2pp/serving, and they are delicious!! I get a little panic-y when I start to run out. They are a little hard to find – I buy them in a local health food store (they are low carb too!), but you can mail order. Happy crunching!

Interesting about the chips. I have to stay far away from them regardless b/c I will end up buried in a bag. But you were very smart to dig a little deeper. I also love all the pics you put up!!

I noticed that you are talking about “Baked” Ruffles chips, but the item that you are checking on eTools is the “Light” Ruffles chips. There is a difference. The “Light” Ruffles chips are the ones that are not baked, but are fried with Olean (the fat substitute). The “Light” chips are less points than the “Baked” ones. (Fat Free Pringles are another example of ridiculously low calorie chips – 70 calories/0 Fat per serving -due to Olean.) If you look them both up on eTools, the Baked Ruffles are 3 points per serving and the Light Ruffles are 2 points per serving.
