Homemade Simply Filling “Ice Cream”!

July 13, 2012 by DanicasDaily 21 Comments

Happy Friday all!  Thanks for all the nice comments, emails, etc. on my Keurig K-Cup Ambassadorship.  It was really interesting to listen to all of your thoughts and I thought I’d share some helpful tips that I’ve learned over the past few years with my Keurig.  I honestly have been using Keurig for as long as I have know Tracey of TJ’s Test Kitchen.  I totally blame her (in a good way!) for getting me hooked!

I actually drink a lot of coffee (like all day!), but, rarely post it because I drink it straight up, nothing added and all day long (0 points+).  My adventures with the Eat Clean Diet actually taught me to drink my coffee black ~ I used to be a total creamer girl.

All of the reviews and comments you will read from me about Keurig will be purely my honest opinion ~ good, not so good or indifferent.  I promise you all will not have to listen to me ramble on every day about Keurig and all that, but, I did think it was important enough to share these tips.

K-CUPS ARE INEXPENSIVE WHEN…..

  • It is CHEAPER to order your coffee online than it is to buy it at Target.  If you sign up for the Keurig Rewards Program, you will receive 10-15% off and emails with discounts and accumulate points for free stuff.  The BEST part in my opinion is that you can buy 5 pack samplers to try a flavor and if you spend $45 shipping is free.  It’s free to join.
  • My other favorite site to buy my k-cups on is CoffeeWiz.Com.  They sell the 24 packs (versus the 12 or 18 you get at the store) for the same price as what you buy the smaller packs for.  If you sign up for their emails, you get discount codes to use.  Order over $65 and shipping is free.
  • Costco & Sam’s Club sell HUGE packs of 80 cups for around $35-$40.
  • Cool Ambassadors give you coupons and host giveaways!

I do agree with those of you who mentioned the non-recyclability of K-Cups and those who want to use their own coffee flavors.  Until the folks are Keurig can find a way to make their cups compostable…..The answer to this is…..The Keurig Coffee Filter!

I bought mine at Target for about $15 and it comes with a re-usable coffee filter.  If you are a fan of French Pressed Coffee, use this ~ it’s just like it!

So, there you have it!  I LOVE my Keurig Brewer and cannot imagine living without it.  Smile

My other love ~ Lattes!!!  This morning I wasn’t really hungry so breakfast turned into a Nonfat Decaf Latte with a banana.

IMG_9444

I had exactly what I was craving today for lunch.  It started off with a Morning Star Spicy Black Bean Burger with all the fixin’s on a Sara Lee Honey Wheat Thin Bun.

IMG_9451

Served up with a gigantic mound of Kale Chips sans the parmesan to save my WPA.

IMG_9454

Cherry Tomato “salad”

IMG_9452

All together with fizzy water and a side of ketchup for dipping my crunchy kale chip “fries” in.

IMG_9459

I finished with the last of our watermelon for dessert.

IMG_9464

The first thing I do when I get out of bed is make coffee to drink while getting ready.  Then, I take or buy coffee.  Every afternoon, I make more to have as a snack ~ sometimes it’s decaf and sometimes it is regular.

I really like the Barista Prima Coffee House Italian Roast cups because they are just strong enough without being too strong and tasty hot or over ice.

IMG_9432

As I was sipping away on my coffee and staring at the pantry, I saw these Sugar Cones and knew I wanted to have one for snack.

IMG_9497

I figured if I ate just a cone, you all might think I am a bit odd….although I’ve totally done that too.

IMG_9496

I mean, it’s a 1 points+ cookie.

IMG_9494

I whipped up a batch of Homemade Simply Filling Strawberry Banana Ice Cream by putting a spin on my Chocolate Banana Ice Cream Recipe.

IMG_9474

I took 1 frozen banana sliced with 5 strawberries and a splash of milk to make one gigantic bowl of creamy ice cream that is 100% Simply Filling Open-mouthed smile

IMG_9484

All you have to do is count that WPA for the cone or any toppings.

IMG_9480

When The Husband got home from work, we packed up for our weekend trip and headed over to Mary’s Pizza Shack for dinner.

I had to try the Minestrone Soup when the server said if you LOVE spicy foods, try this…..um, ok .

I am totally re-creating this soup in the winter ~ it was smoky, spicy, salty and chunky.

IMG_9507

Side Salad with 1 Tbsp ranch, fork dipped (2 WPA for the dressing)

IMG_9501

I had a super proud moment in that I ordered soup & salad at a pizza/pasta place.  So, I rewarded myself with bread ~ gahhhh!  I couldn’t resist today….it was worth it though. (4 WPA)

IMG_0453_thumb

STATS (12 am – 830pm):

  • 2,077 calories burned
  • 3,591 steps taken
  • 7 WPA used, 10 WPA remaining (26 daily points+)

Let the weekend begin!

Night all!

Is there any special way to use the Keurig to make iced coffee? (Other than brewing hot and letting it cool down?)

      Hi Robin,

I will brew mine over a cup of ice using the smallest brew cup setting or I brew a cup, put it in the fridge then pour it over ice later. Both are delicious.

Depending on the size cup you want to make your ice coffee in. You can fill your cup up with ice, take a strong coffee k cup and brew it. Then when that is done over the ice you put more ice in and then whatever else you put in it. My daughter makes ice coffee all the time with her Keruig. She uses a 24 house cup filled half way with ice and the brews her coffee in there. Then she adds more ice and whatever else she wants in it. You have to try the different size cups to see which works for you. Depending on how strong you like your coffee. I hope this helps.

I’ve been a Keurig for years. I will try your coffee wiz site but I must admit I am hooked on Dunkin Donuts coffee for it. I’m the only coffee drinker in my house so for me it’s less expensive than brewing a pot and throwing a lot away. I’m only a morning drinker.

Slide the bottom away to put a tall glass filled with ice under it to brew for ice coffee. If you are using really glass don’t forget to put a spoon in so the glass won’t crack (a southern trick).

My husband is going out of town this week and I am committing myself to a mindfulmweekmof eating.

I am so jealous of your banana soft-serve! I’m getting a food processor for my upcoming birthday just so I can make it again. =P

OMG-how did you stop drinking your coffee with creamer? I say I like coffee with my cream, but I need to reduce the amount of cream I use. Any suggestions? I am now hooked on drinking my ice coffee like you, but I need my morning coffee hot (with flavored cream). I LOVE your blog! Thanks for sharing!

For those worried about the recycle-ability of the K-Cups, I encourage them to check out the new Keurig Vue. Those vue cups are recyclable. 🙂

Our new Cuisinart Keurig came with a “My K Cup” so you can use your own coffee. Problem with that is that you have to sort of take the place you put the k-cup apart a bit to use it. I found one at Bed Bath and Beyond that’s just a little filter…you fill it with your coffee and drop it in just like a K-cup…no disassembly required of your coffee maker. Love the Keurig!! Thanks for the cheap coffee tips…gonna check them out.

Thanks for sharing the info on buying k-cups! I wish I had read this more timely since my husband and I just spent a ton of money at Target yesterday stocking back up.

Hi! Thanks for the iced coffee tips – it is now on my list!

I made your Harvest Grains Salad – it’s a winner-and-a-half! I had to do a little tweakage to use what I had on hand, so a few “creative” items fell in the bowl – red onion (in place of chives), golden balsamic (in place of white), some toasted slivered almonds, diced zucchini, and a few dried cranberries (because I had to clean out the fridge after an extended blackout). I can actually envision the salad as a base for a lot of different veggies.

Thank you so, so much for sharing!

Love the additions and substitutions Robin. I never even thought of adding almonds and cranberries but I think they would be amazing in this salad.

Love the idea for the icecream!! I have been a Keurig user for a few years now and I love it! Will never go back! I use the website http://www.greenmountaincoffee.com. As a Cafe Express member (free) you get 15% off (slightly cheaper than coffeewhiz) and you get free shipping with four boxes ordered. Plus, as long as you are a Cafe Express member, your Keurig brewer is covered with an extended warranty!! Just thought I’d share my experience!

I still think about that salad. It was really good. Didnt like the pizza though, not at all. I’m weird and will only drink iced coffee. I make a pot of coffee, add my sugar free syup and half and half and ice it. It lasts for 4 days. I only drink one cup a day. I do not like any hot drinks at all, yep, I’m weird.
