Happy Sunday all! So, you know how I was telling you all that everyone loved the BBQ Cheddar Turkey Burgers we grilled up on Friday night and never mentioned that they were not beef. Well, last night, we found out that BEARS do not like turkey burgers. Or at least, the one who decided to visit our camp for a late night snack.
Now before I jump into the story, let me just start by saying I know we should have locked up or hung up our food, but, everyone at Camp Richardson assured us this was not necessary because there were so many people. For anyone wondering…this doesn’t really matter to bears who are used to people camping.
Around 1 am last night, The Husband heard our cooler open up and he thought my brother in law was snacking on our leftover tri tip. As he was pondering going out to join him, he heard my brother in law yelling at the bear to get out of there. We both peeked out the tent to see the bear who honestly was not scary – he was a pretty big brown bear about 4 tall. He slowly walked away when my brother in law opened their trailer door.
When we walked outside to see what he got into, I was literally cracking up ~ The bear through the leftover turkey burger into the fire pit but ate all the tri tip and Canadian bacon – HA!
Yup, we pretty much freaked out the rest of the night at any sound we heard, but, there also wasn’t anything else left for the bear to come back for. We agreed if he had wanted to eat us, then, he would’ve started at our tent not the cooler.
We all chatted about it all morning long as we drank the Gevalia French Roast Coffee the folks at Kraft sent me to review. For the record, everyone loved it ~ this coffee makes camp fire mornings pretty amazing.
I had the same breakfast both days that we cooked over our campfire in pans ~ so fun!
Scrambled eggs, 2 slices Canadian Bacon and a Sara Lee Honey Wheat Thin bun.
(SF) – 6 points+
We spent each day going for bike rides all over Lake Tahoe on the bike trail that wraps around the lake, stopping to hike on any trail we came across and ultimately ending up at the beach each day.
It was nice to prop up my feet with my Ham-Wich, chips, pluot and book on the beach and just read. I kept thinking, I NEED to do this more often. (SF+3 WPA for the chips) – 8 points+
Each afternoon we snacked on watermelon wedges as we hung out at camp ground playing games, chatting it up and getting dinner read.
The irresistable BBQ Tri Tip with The Husband’s “secret sauce”. We all totally told him it was that “secret” sauce that the bear was after but he still wouldn’t spill his secret
3 oz BBQ Tri Tip (SF) – 3 points+
1/3 cup Bush’s Steakhouse Grill Baked Beans – (SF+ 2 WPA) 2 points+
I am actually really glad I made up 2 Large Ziploc Bags of Mixed Greens and Pasta Salad (one for each night) since it made having sides with each dinner pretty simple.
1/2 cup Vegan Pasta Salad ~ this salad just gets better each day (SF) – 2 points+
Mixed Greens with 1 Tbsp sunflower seeds and 1 Tbsp ranch (SF+2 WPA) – 2 points+
I do have to confess I had a few bites of The Husband’s Pralines & Cream Ice Cream Sundae. I figure I earned it with all my activity and it was worth it!
Since I post about South Lake Tahoe and the bike trail often, I will just share some of my favorite pictures from this weekend.
My nephew was obsessed with biking to Rainbow Bridge for two reasons.
When you walk down Rainbow Trail, you can see where all the bears have walked in the grass to get to the river to catch fish.
The bears also mark up all the trees ~ believe it or not, this is a tourist spot that bears just happen to go to….you know, because people do NOT scare them away
The aquarium at the bottom of the trail ~ the best time to check this out is during Salmon season in late September/October – it gets packed with fish.
We didn’t hike to Emerald Bay this time, but, we did go down a few other trails that were just as beautiful.
Pope Beach was about a 1/2 mile from our camp ground so we were always walking there with my niece/nephew to see what changed since the last time we went there.
The water is so clear that if you look closely you can see the fish swimming on our shadows.
The ducks are not shy either, they just walk right up to you on the beach.
Our sand castle masterpiece!
The Husband was so funny ~ when my nephew asked him to help build a “log” cabin, he actually broke out his tool box to help. Seriously….this was so cute to watch!
The finished product complete with my nephew’s fort so the chipmunks could stop by to visit too.
