Coogee Bay, Australia

February 25, 2013 by DanicasDaily 9 Comments

Happy Weekend All!  Our first week in Adelaide Australia was fabulous and we were sad to see our stay in the cute Glenelg Beach town come to an end.  However, we knew our trip would not be complete without a short stop over in Sydney.  We split out stay here in Sydney into two stops at the beach and one in city center.

First up was Coogee Bay (pronounced Cuji).

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Coogee Bay as the hotel is located just meters from the beach.

I think one of the biggest changes for me here is that most coffee is instant or espresso with hot water added to it (aka a Long Black Coffee).  I usually start off with instant coffee in the room then, grab a Long Black Coffee when we head out for the day from the local café.

It was pouring rain, storming and windy outside, but, it didn’t stop us from heading out to check out the pool and the waves.

Each floor has a community balcony you can head out on.  This is the view from the balcony.

The town is very much a beach town, but, is hilly like San Francisco.

The wind was so strong that is actually blew this sign off the poll!

The beach was open for strolling, but, closed to swimming due to the storms and crazy waves.

We chatted it up with a few locals on our walk and they said that this storm was very unusual and they had never seen winds or rain that gusted over 100 kilometers per hour.

The waves were probably like 15 feet tall and not uniform at all ~ they went in several directions and totally reminded us of that show on Discovery where they go fishing for King Crabs in Alaska.

We pretty much decided that we wouldn’t be swimming at Coogee Beach.

There are trails all along the coast line that allow you to walk from beach to beach and they have maps you can grab to let you know how long a walk it is to each beach (pretty cool!)

IMG_1983

Just like in Adelaide, everyone is out and about walking their dogs, walking and jogging.

IMG_2003

I love the way they let you know which side to walk on….Follow the fish on the left

And the Sting Ray on the Left (right) on your way back.

IMG_1996

When we got up in the morning, the rain had subsided, but, the waves had not.

We headed up the other side of the trail to check out the rocks, waves and to get pictures of Coogee Bay.

IMG_2059

The beach was still closed, but, it didn’t stop everyone from coming out to enjoy the sunshine.

IMG_2056

At every beach we saw, they have these “Public Baths” ~ swim areas that are like ocean pools that you can swim in.

IMG_2038

We had so much fun watching the kids line up……

Then, watching the waves wipe them out.

Beautiful!

Our next stops are downtown Sydney, the Wild Life Zoo/Aquarium, Darling Harbour and The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, and Botney Bay.

It is so lovely to see you in Australia! My sister has lived in Sydney (I am in Ohio) for about 4 years. They now live in Wagga Wagga. I had the opportunity to visit her in Sydney, primarily Cronulla (which is a great beach town if you can get to it) in August of 2011. I LOVED THAT COUNTRY! I kept calling it America 2.0 because it is so similar but much better. Have a great time. Australia is one of the best places I have ever been. 🙂

I am so jealous! I am sick of winter and craving the beach. Headed to Florida next week so hopefully I will get my “fix”. 🙂

i lived in coogee for a semester in college and seeing this post makes me so happy! i lived on dolphin street, about a block up from the coogee bay hotel.

if yall didn’t eat at a fish called coogee, you must! all the fish is delicious and so fresh. also check out melonhead on the other side of the street — they have great juices, smoothies and light meals.

Your photos are amazing, Danica. My grandson is headed to Australia next month, and my son lived in Sydney for 6 months. I envy them. Have a great stay!
