Wow, I have to admit I’m slightly jealous about what you are looking at right now as opposed to what I’m looking at (cold, rainy, grey..). We were in Jamaica this past winter and because I LOVE coconut that I buy in the grocery stores I thought I’d love the fresh coconut that they CUT OFF THE TREES RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. But then I tried it and…. I was not impressed. I didn’t like the texture or the taste. I’m anxious to hear what you thought of it!
Christy – I’m from the Caribbean, where fresh coconuts are regularly consumed. Every person I’ve ever introduced to it are fans. I had one person say it reminded them of unflavored Gatorade. It’s an acquired taste, I’m guessing. I will add that there’s a range in flavor depending on the age of the coconut. The younger (greener) they are, the less sweet they are. The older they get, the sweeter the water, and the more jelly hardens to become like the inside of the coconut you usually encounter in the US market. Personally, my favorite is to get it ‘medium’. The water isn’t overly sweet and the jelly is still sweet-ish and soft and truly jelly like (not hard)

Coconuts disguised as pineapples?
